Lush residential garden redesign in Saint-Lambert

Case Study: Garden Refresh in Saint-Lambert

The owners of a stately brick home on one of Saint-Lambert's tree-lined residential streets wanted to refresh their front and side garden beds, which had become overgrown and inconsistent over the years. Previous plantings had been added piecemeal without an overall design plan, resulting in a cluttered mix of leggy shrubs, struggling perennials, and bare patches where plants had died out. The homeowners wanted a clean, polished look that would complement their home's classic architecture while requiring minimal ongoing maintenance. Saint-Lambert is known for its elegant streetscapes and well-kept properties, so garden aesthetics carry real weight in this community. The front yard receives partial shade from two large mature sugar maples, which limits plant selection and creates dry conditions due to root competition. The side garden bed, by contrast, gets full afternoon sun and tends to dry out quickly in the summer heat. We needed a design that addressed these very different growing conditions within the same property. Our first step was a thorough cleanup -- we removed all existing plantings, pulled out the old, deteriorating plastic edging, and stripped back the compacted wood mulch that had built up over several seasons. The bed shapes were redesigned with graceful curves that flow naturally along the foundation and driveway, replacing the rigid straight lines that had made the old layout feel stiff. We installed natural flagstone edging sourced from a Laurentian quarry, which adds a timeless quality that suits Saint-Lambert's character. For the shaded front beds, we selected a layered planting scheme anchored by compact yew shrubs for evergreen structure, filled in with shade-loving hostas in several varieties for textural contrast, astilbe for summer color, and heuchera for year-round foliage interest. The sunny side bed received a different treatment with Karl Foerster ornamental grasses for vertical movement, black-eyed Susans and coneflowers for midsummer bloom, and low-growing sedum at the front edge for ground coverage and fall color. All beds were finished with a fresh three-inch layer of natural cedar mulch. The project was completed in three working days. The homeowners were very pleased with the immediate visual transformation and commented that the garden now looks intentional and cohesive rather than random. We provided a simple seasonal maintenance guide covering spring cleanup, deadheading schedules, and fall cutback instructions to keep the garden looking sharp with minimal effort.
